When is the Best Time to Visit Seattle?

A total of 39.9 million people visited Seattle and Washington State in 2017. That’s a 2.6% increase from 2016. Not only this, these visitors spent more than $7.4 billion in the county.

The above is no real surprise as Seattle has some of the most amazing events and attractions. The city also has mounds of great spots to eat and drink.

But, as with every part of the world, some seasons are better than others if you’re planning a trip to the Emerald City.

Read this article to find out more about when the best time to visit Seattle is. We’ll also give you some tips on which parts to visit depending on your individual preferences.

High, Shoulder, and Low Tourist Seasons in Seattle

There are three levels of tourism in Seattle. Here they are:

High Season

Between June and August, tourists flood the city. This is because it’s dry, sunny, and warm during these months. It’s the perfect time for people to explore the area.

Not only this, ferries, flights, buses, and all other public transport runs on a more frequent basis. With the above in mind, you should book your accommodation in advance because it can be hard to find a spot at a reasonable price.

Shoulder Season

When the rain starts, there are fewer people in Seattle. But, some do still dwindle through the streets to visit the many attractions. The shoulder season includes the following months:

  • April
  • May
  • September
  • October

May and September are the sunniest months of this mid-range season.

Low Season

Between November and March, tourists stay away from the Emerald City. The days are wet, dark, and not great for sightseeing.

That said if you love visiting museums or want to ski, you can find great deals on hotels and airfares during this period.

Seattle’s Hottest and Coldest Months

June to early September are the hottest months of the year. During this period, you can expect highs in the low 70s and lows in the high 40s. That said, Seattle does have the odd heatwave too. During the summer months, you may experience highs in the 80s or 90s.

But, it’s not like that all year round.

Winter is from October to March. During these months, the average high is between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Lows can drop into the 30s and it rains a lot. You may also experience snow if you’re visiting during this season.

Getting Around Seattle

You’ll have a wealth of choices when it comes to navigating the city. Your choice of transport will depend on the areas you want to visit and your budget.

If you head to Downtown Seattle, you can walk everywhere. The area is compact and all the major attractions are close together. Also, avoid driving into the city by car if you can. Parking is expensive and during the high season, it’s also hard to find.

If you want to venture outside of Seattle to see the National Park and other attractions, a car is your best bet. Not only this, you can explore some of the neighborhoods outside of Downtown.

If a car doesn’t suit your budget or needs, you can visit some of these areas using the city’s public transport. Public transport options include:

  • The Seattle Streetcar
  • The Seattle Monorail
  • The trolley system
  • The Metro bus

You can also grab a cab to do your exploring.

The Seattle Visitor Center

Seattle has some of the best tourist centers in the world, one of which is the Seattle Visitor Center. You can find the center in the Upper Pike Street Lobby which is in the Convention Center.

You can also head to the Marketing Information Center in Pike Place Market for extra information.

Pike Place and Pike Street are both in the center of Downtown and walking distance from all the major attractions.

If, for any reason, you can’t find these centers, have a chat with one of the Metropolitan Improvement Ambassadors. You’ll find them walking the streets dressed in yellow and blue. They’re there especially to help people and get feedback about the cities facilities and attractions.
